Some of them are new and some are as old as time and have been passed down from mother and grandmothers. We will discuss some swaddling techniques below.

Proper Ways to Use Swaddle Blankets:
Technique One

  • Lay a blanket on a flat surface
  • Fold down the top corner about 6 inches in to form a straight edge
  • Place baby on blanket starting from the shoulder down
  • Pull the corners of the blanket over both the left and right arms and then the chest and tuck the edge of the side on top over the baby and under the other side.
  • Fold or twist (depending on how much cloth is left) the bottom end of the blanket and tuck it loosely
  • Make sure the baby’s legs are bent forward and upwards and that they can spread apart in the swaddle
  • Make sure the swaddle is not too tight

Proper Ways to Use Swaddle Blankets:
Technique Two

According to https://www.under5s.co.nz, another swaddling technique is

  • Fold the top corner 2/3 of the way down and lay on a flat surface. Lay your baby on top.
  • Hold your baby’s left arm down against their body and use the left flap to wrap very firmly around your baby’s body and tuck the rest flat underneath your baby’s body.
  • Take the point down by your baby’s feet and tuck it over behind their right shoulder, leaving enough room to allow for straight legs.
  • Hold your baby’s right arm straight and take a segment of the right flap to pull it across their body to make a ‘v’ neck. Hold this in place with the thumb of your left hand during step five.
  • While holding the ‘v’ in place use your whole right hand to pull the rest of the right flap firm and flat across your baby’s body and right behind them. This should be done in a way that your baby’s legs/thighs and hips are left loose and allowed to naturally bend and rotate outwards in a relaxed position.
  • Bring the flap behind your baby, right around to the front on the right side again and tuck it into the right side of the ‘v’ neck. This is the key to a secure wrap.

Other Uses of Swaddle Blankets

Besides swaddling a baby, a swaddle blanket can be used for many other things. Having one or two blankets in hand is always useful because they can be used for many different things when taking care of a baby

As a Playmat

A swaddle blanket can be used as a playmat in situations where one is needed. Instead of letting the baby sit on the floor and play on the floor or on a suspicious surface, you can bring out the swaddle blanket and spread it out. This gives the baby plenty of room to play on and you are sure that they are safe from germs. Do not forget to wash the blanket after instances like this where you lay it on the floor.

As a Nursing Cover

In instances when a mum feels the need to cover up while nursing, she can use a swaddle blanket as a cover so she can get some privacy.

As a Stroller Cover

The swaddle blanket can also be used as a stroller cover to shield the baby from the sun or from a light drizzle. Just spread the blanket over the shoulder and it will provide shade. Make sure the blanket is light and breathable and make sure you check on the baby regularly or leave a small hole so the baby is still in your line of sight.

As a Car Seat Cover

Just like with the stroller, you can also use a swaddle blanket to cover a car seat to provide the baby some shade and protection from external elements. This is used in situations where you are transporting a baby outside in a car seat, but if the baby is in the car seat and in the car, there is no need to cover them up with a  blanket except to tuck them in. Even so, some regulations state that you put the blanket over the baby after they have their car seat belts on so that the blanket does not hinder the seat belt.
